According to the US bureau of labor statistics, in 2010 the retail industry had the largest employee number in the US, which equaled around 14.4 million people employed in this sector. There are many types of retail industries such as types by products. Retail is usually classified by such products as food, hard goods such as electronics, furniture and sporting goods, soft goods or consumables such as clothing, apparel, and other fabrics. They can be defined by the market strategy as department stores are large stores that offer a variety of soft and hard commodities. They can also be defined by demographic retailers that aim at one particular segment. Description of Retail Industry The Wal-Mart company became the world’s largest profitable public corporation with annual revenues exceeding 100 billion USD. Wal-Mart is an American multinational company that is operating in 27 countries with 11,000 stores around the world, selling its goods under 55 different brands and names such as in Mexico as Wal-Mart de Mà ©xico Centro America, and in Japan as Seiyu. Wal-Mart is highly successful in its operations and profits in the following markets: the United Kingdom, South America, and China; however, in Germany and South Korea it has no significant success. Wal-Mart has more than 2 million employees in all retail outlets which make it the largest retailer in the world. Wal-Mart is using the mechanisms of mass distribution to reduce their prices and provide competitive ones. Wal-Mart is selling a variety of mostly grocery and non-grocery products that make it the most popular and largest retail stores in the US. There have been employed 14.4 million people in the US retail industry in 2010. The retail industry is expected to grow in the future by an annually compounded rate of 5% from 2010 to 2015. The most significant retail format commonplaces in the US are Wal-Mart Markets, Supercenters, Discount Stores and walmart.com, which operates online. Wal-Mart offers many groups of products like furniture, food and beverages, household products, electronics, pharmacy items, books, toys and video games, movies, sport and fitness items, clothes and automotive repair parts. Wal-Mart is a family-owned business controlled by the Walton family, who own 50% of its shares. Wal-Mart is one of the most unique companies having the greatest market capitalization with market value of 244,079.4 million USD in 2013. In 2006, Wal-Mart announced the pilot program to reduce the generic drugs prices at just 4$ per prescription. Most of the low cost items included in the pilot program are imported from India. The program, however, caused a big difference in prices with name-brand drugs. In 2007, Wal-Mart launched the â€Å"beta† program of electronic movie downloading service that received high demand in the beginning and discontinued by the end of the same year due to low sales. Wal-Mart faced a huge competition; one of its competitors is WinCo Foods and in other operated countries, these are Kmart, Publix, Target, ShopKo and Meijer, the Giant Tiger and Real Canadian Superstore in Canada, Commercial Mexicana, and Soriano in Mexico. Wal-Mart, however, could not operate successfully in Germany and South Korea because of the competition. In 2006, Wal-Mart announced its withdrawal from there and was sold to Metro Company; it later did the same in South Korea by selling 16 outlets to Shinsegae. Wal-Mart continues its operation in the UK market that became their second largest retailer with â€Å"Asda.† Wal-Mart struggled to export its brand due to several issues such as culture, market competitions, consumer preferences and political boundaries. The aim of the following research is emphasizing the facts of Wal-Mart opportunity to increase their connection with their international customers, which will enhance the relationship between them. The higher growth in the retail industry (international growth) helps Wal-Mart reach a wider range of customers and, as a result, this increases their sales and profits; it gained $446,950 million in 2010. And that is also because Wal-Mart offers all types of products, therefore, they deal with a great number of suppliers who provide a huge opportunity to expand. In addition, in this way they can offer high quality and affordable prices to customers. International growth helps Wal-Mart to understand customer needs and withhold the competition with other retailer by offering a variety of purchasing opportunities like buying through online shop, mobile and in store. Research Questions I will try to find out the Wal-Mart’s values, objectives and strategic plans for the customers, and define whether Wal-Mart’s customers are aware of them. The main point I will try to look for is the increase sales and opportunities in Wal-Mart. Does it have any effect on employees and customers? I can find this information by doing secondary research like looking through business articles that interviewed Wal-Mart’s employees and customers. Also, I will study the question of whether Wal-Mart revenues are increasing or not. There are different ways I can find that information like comparing the financial results for Wal-Mart over different years. Moreover, I will conduct a research on what media Wal-Mart uses to contact the customers. Also, I will answer the question of whether employees are trained professionally to deal with all types of customers and what the different ways of accomplishing it are. I can find this information by referring to primary research, making a phone interview or sending an email. In addition, I will look for the tools, systems and technologies Wal-Mart uses to meet the customers’ needs. Furthermore, I will research on how many times Wal-Mart does the customer satisfaction surveys yearly. What surveys do they conduct (telephone, front office, email, website)? Research Plan I will depend on two types of research, primary and secondary, to find out accurate information. Primary Research In primary research, I will use many ways to find the correct information such as questionnaires, interviews, direct comments and telephone interviews. I will use questionnaires for different groups of customers to find out their opinion regarding the Wal-Mart opportunity. Secondary Research In the secondary research, I will refer to different sources such as journals, online articles, newspapers and trade magazine articles. Also, I will find the similar useful articles regarding this issue in manufactory sector magazine. These will be Business 2.0, Business Week, and Business Review USA. The main point I will try to find out in the secondary research is how international growth helps Wal-Mart to understand customer needs along with Wall- Mart values, objectives and strategic plans. I will also find out if customers are aware of such. Answers to the Research Questions Wal-Mart values, objectives and strategic plans for the customers. One of the key values or beliefs at Wal-Mart is that every consumer should have a chance to enjoy branded products at a cheap price. To the company, enjoying branded products should not be something experienced by the rich in the society. Such value has helped the company attract more and more customers over the years. This value has ensured that the company continues to have a competitive edge compared to other world stores. The main objective of Wal-Mart Company is to ensure people live a good life and save money at the same time. To successfully survive with its values and objectives, Wal-Mart thus adopts different strategic plans ensuring low price. The company has produced strategies such as 40-60 % discounted prices for consumers on good quality brand name products. The company has maintained low cost of operation; it has minimized travelling expenses, importing manufactured products from cheap sources such as C hina, Bangladesh and India. Other strategies that the company has adopted are low spending on the health care of employees, reduced wages and salaries and denying employees to form or join any labor union. Although some of these strategies have turned out to be double-edged and hurting the organizational name, the companys profits have always been consistent and it has continued to expand internationally. When a customer visits a shopping store, the customer should find what he or she is looking for and customers usually search for products sold at affordable prices. Many of Wal-Mart customers are aware of the values and objectives. Customers are aware that the company aims at giving them an experience of branded products at discounted or low price. Regarding the strategies used, many customers are not aware of the strategies adopted by the company. What is of importance to many customers is that the store offers the best and most competitive prices in the market. Does the Increase in Sales and Opportunities in Wal-Mart Affect Employees and Customers? The increase in sales and opportunities for Wal-Mart Company has been a very controversial issue in America. Despite the increasing sales and opportunities for the company, it has been criticized because of its policies that negatively affect its employees. The company receives critics from many ethicists, groups and labor unions. Many of the critics have reported that despite the fact that the company was named by Fortune the best company in 2003, it continued to adopt policies that appeared to oppress the customers. In 2011, total sales amounted to approximately 4 trillion dollars. Despite such huge sales, the company still offers very low health care services to its employees. The company has also been cited to be among the companies that do not offer a good remuneration to their customers. In fact, approximately 70% of its employees have been said to quit their jobs within the first year of employment. Despite the fact that the company continues to get more opportunities in incre asing its store number all over the world, employees seem to be at a disadvantage. The company’s values and objectives of offering low prices on branded products have heightened negative impacts on employees. The company prevails internationally, and the projections are that Wal-Mart will carry on its founding philosophy of saving money and living a better life. It means that employees working at the company will continue to experience poor working conditions and payments. The increase in sales and opportunities for the Wal-Mart Company has meant something different to the customers. The company appears to work on the utilitarian theory of doing what is right to the majority. Customers visiting the store have continued to experience good quality branded products offered at very low prices. Therefore, it can be said that to Wal-Mart customers, increase in sales and opportunities has resulted to low prices and many discounted products. However, from the side of employees, increase in sales and opportunities for the company has translated to low wages and salaries, poor health care and inadequate time for resting and offs. In fact, the company has been sued severely by its employees for failing to pay overtime, offering inadequate lunch breaks and failing to pay employees for working off the clock. Do Wal-Mart Revenues Increase or Not? Wal-Mart continues to experience new opportunities and experiment on new horizons. It enabled the company to serve more than 200 million every week at it has more than 11, 000 retail stores located in 27 different countries. Wal-Mart is one of the largest companies and employers in Canada and America today. Wal-Mart net sale increased by 5 % to reach 466 billion dollars for the fiscal year 2013. The company also returned 13 billion dollars to its shareholders through dividends and share repurchases. Revenue increase for the company is an art that the management of the chain store seems to have mastered. Over the years, the company’s revenue appears to have increased tremendously. In 2010, the net revenue was $ 408.21 billion dollars. In 2011, the net revenue for the company was $ 421.85 and this was a $ 13.64 increase. In the year ending in January 2012, the company’s net revenue was $ 446.95 billion. Again this was a $ 25.1 billion increase in revenue. For the year ending in January 2013, the total revenue for the company was $ 469.16 billion and again this was an increase of $ 22.21 billion. Finally, having a look at the total revenue for the fiscal year ending in January 2014, it indicates that the total revenue for Wal-Mart was $ 476.29 billion and this was also an increase compared to that of the previous year by $ 7.13 billion. Looking at these five year trends for the company, it is apparent that the company’s revenue continues to increase every year. Although many people criticize the strategies used by the company to make a profit, the difference between a performing and under-performing CEO is the ability to make the company profitable. Therefore, the management at Wal-Mart can only be described as performing. Despite the harsh economic turmoil the world is going through, th e company has proved very profitable for the last five years. Media Used by Wal-Mart to Contact Customers. Did Employees Get Trained Professionally to Deal with all Types of Customers with the Different Ways? Wal-Mart believes in maintaining a close contact with its customers. Social media has thus turned out to be the most effective and efficient media to contact customers. Social media has offered a special opportunity for the company to interact with and contact the customers. Recently, the Wal-Mart Company was ranked as the largest public corporation in the world by the Fortune Magazine. The company has adopted digital communication as the main media of maintaining a close contact with the customers. The Wal-Mart’s digital communication personnel have two major responsibilities. First, the digital communication team responsible for contacting customer is tasked with the role of ensuring that customers and potential customers are made aware that the store has the lowest prices in the industry. The team also plays the role of communicating the message that the company has a mission of helping various people in saving money so as to live better lives. The second role assigned to t he digital communication team is to protect, enhance and defend Wal-Mart’s reputation. The major media sources used by the company in its digital communication are Facebook, Twitter, Google +, and Pinterest. In ensuring close contact with the customers through Facebook, Wal-Mart has put up a huge effort in developing its Facebook presence. The company has embraced the Facebook timeline to depict how the brand has grown over the years. The company has populated its Facebook timeline with images for almost every year since it started operations in 1962. Through this media, Wal-Mart has been able to contact its customers worldwide. On their Twitter handle, Wal-Mart uses this media as a platform to pose or ask questions to customers as a means of ensuring close contact. Questions include topics on sports, requests for re-tweets and caption contests if followers agree with the posts. Wal-Mart values the significance of using Twitter to contact its customers rather than just using it as a means of marketing. The company has managed to clock up a lot of followers. The company has two Pinterest accounts. One of the accounts aims at product ideas and the second aims to promote green living. Taking into consideration the challenges that come along with social media as means of contact, the company has established engagement guidelines within all these means of media. These guidelines form a part of what can be observed to be a training of how the digital team employees should deal with customers. For example, some of the guidelines beg the staff to be polite and courteous when contacting customers through these media. The guideline on being polite and courteous requires that employees to restrain from excessive name use, avoid discriminatory epithets, bullying, and sexual harassment. These aspects of the guidelines form a part of the training the employees receive when dealing with different customers. Type of Tools, Systems and Technologies Used by Wal-Mart to Meet the Customer Needs Wal-Mart mainly focuses on mobile tools in meeting customer needs. When Sam Walton established the chain in 1962, he believed in an empire that could provide value for customers and empower employees. He established a culture of obtaining the most important information about clients’ wants. The result has been that Wal-Mart operation turned to be speedy and convenient. It has been contributed greatly by the mobile tools, systems and technologies adopted by the company to meet the needs of the customers. The use of IT/Information Technology has been a building block for Wal-Mart’s growth. Some years ago, Wal-Mart trailed K-Mart, which could negotiate lower wholesale prices as a result of its size. As part of the company’s strategy to catch up, the company came up with a point-of-sale system. Point-of-sale system was a computerized system that identified each item sold. The technology could then find the item’s price in a computerized database and create an accurate sales receipt for the client. The technology was also capable of storing this item by item sales info for use in analyzing sales and reordering inventory. Additionally, this technology system helps the company avoid issues of overstocking. The system enables the reordering of products that are selling fast and this creates convenience for customers. Another technology used by Wal-Mart is the barcode scanner. The barcode scanner makes the sales information available to the main computer system for reordering and analysis. How Many Times Does Wal-Mart Do the Consumer Satisfaction Survey Yearly? Every company today has a customer satisfaction survey and Wal-Mart has not been left behind in this new area. Reporting on the refund policy, 9 customers said that the policy was clear and 11 customers that that they were not fully aware of the refund policy of the Wal-Mart stores. 19 customers reported that the labels and prices on the items sold at Wal-Mart helped them make a decision. Only 1 customer felt that the item description labels and prices helped him make a decision. Additional Questionnaire The following is an additional questionnaire in which 20 more different customers have been surveyed. The questionnaire aimed at collecting both the quantitative and qualitative data. The questionnaire had a total of three questions. Do you think Wal-Mart Company has what it takes to be a leading retail outlet? Out of the 20 customers surveyed with this question, 16 customers said that Wal-Mart had all the components or the characteristics of the world retail outlet. These customers went ahead to give some of the reasons that made them believe that Wal-Mart was a unique retail outlet. Something that stands out for Wal-Mart is that customers know that the company has been ranked as the best company by the Fortune Magazine. It is one element that has made several customers believe that indeed the company has the qualities of a world class retail outlet. 3 out of the 20 customers who responded to this question agreed that Wal-Mart is a world class retail outlet. They said that the company sells branded products at very competitive prices compared to those of the major competitors. The customer believes that a world class retail outlet should be in a position to offer such prices to the customers. One of the customers who responded to this question said that he was not sure of where to place Wa l-Mart. From the response of the customers, it is clear that Wal-Mart is a unique company that has the potential of growing every dawn. The confidence that customers have about the company indicates that Wal-Mart has the potential to thrive in every corner of the world. Do you think the strategies used by Wal-Mart to achieve its objectives of offering competitive prices in comparison to its competitors in the market are appropriate? Out of 20 respondents, 9 of them were aware of the strategies used by Wal-Mart. They were able to highlight cheap sourcing of cheap products from countries like China, India and Bangladesh. 9 respondents seemed to approve these strategies. They reported that, Wal-Mart brands most of the products and its products are of good quality. However, 6 respondents seemed to be not very sure of whether the strategies adopted by Wal-Mart were appropriate. They cited some complaints stated by labor unions and ethicists that Wal-Mart exploits its employees in the name of offering low prices to customers. It made the customers not very sure of whether Wal-Mart strategies were appropriate. 5 of the respondents were not aware of the strategies used by the company to offer low prices. However, they said that Wal-Mart was the best retail outlet of all times. From the response of the customers, it can be seen that if customers are getting satisfied with the commodities that the company offers, then the strategies used by the company are not very important. Customers will always be cautious about the value of their money and the products that they are getting in return. Customers will not care where the products come from as all the products are genuine, of good quality, and following the international standards. Have you ever bought a defective product or produce and claimed a refund? What was the company’s reaction? Out of 20 respondents, only 2 customers reported having bought defective products from the company. One of the customers had bought a washing machine which broke down within the first week of use. The customer reported that the company was very apologetic of the incident and that it replaced the washing machine with a new one. The second customer said that he bought a Sony Home Theatre, but reached home only to note that one of its speakers was not functioning. Just like in the first customer’s case, the company’s department responsible for the customer complaints was very apologetic and a new fully functioning Home Theatre was given to the customer. 18 customers reported that they had never encountered a case of a defective product. From this response from the customers, it can be identified that Wal-Mart is a retail store that is concerned with the happiness of its customers. The company will go to a great extent to ensure that customers live a happy life just like th e company’s slogan attests.

World council of churches - Essay Example In addition, the speakers discussed the role of faith organizations in the in the care for nature, human rights and ethical decision-making in climate change debates. The quantity of carbon dioxide gas into the atmosphere is increasing. The increase is attributed to the increased emissions of the gas from automobiles and burning of fossil fuels. Notably, the rise of middle-class population and the increased number of people who own cars has significantly increased emission rates. The Industrial emissions increase the level of carbon into the air. Increased quantity of carbon dioxide facilitates climate change. The Development Information Security Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 6250 words

The Development Information Security - Essay Example There are many well-known security standards available, for instance, ISO, NIST, and COBAT. However, most of the Security Frameworks stress more on compliance requirements and controls rather than effectiveness. Standards, procedures and practices provided to larger organization easily swamp the SMEs. Due to lack of resources, SMEs often spend minimum amount on security and scarcely utilize their resources to apply hundreds of good practices provided by security standards and frameworks. Furthermore, SMEs do not adapt to all the ISO security standards rather they define their own strategies in order to meet their specific security goals. It indicates the importance of providing SMEs a security framework that facilitates the task of identifying and applying security measures in accordance with their own needs and requirements. Therefore, we need to go back to square one and design a more suitable portfolio of solutions in order to cater a broader set of organizations and circumstances . There is no single industry security standard that provides all the answers. However, a good industry standard does provide a widely accepted and proven framework. It not only defines a particular security program in order to provide a foundation for security system but also satisfies particular needs of the organization. Such framework is derived from the development of a prioritized set of objectives and practices as suggested by literature and standards provided by ISO standards. This security framework provides steps to establish best suited Information Security Management System (ISMS) for SMEs. These ISMS are based on ISO standards which enable SMEs to see the value of security outside of technical constraints and regulatory compliance. Moreover, it helps SMEs to incorporate security  practices, controls and procedures to align business requirements with IT security requirements. Moreover, it provides support for effective use of technology, central management, adaptabilit y, flexibility, performance, interoperability and compliance on the forefront.

Proffessional Development for Marketers Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Proffessional Development for Marketers - Essay Example I am very positive that this will be possible, and my target is not only to exceed the previous DVD sales for the first installment of Hunger Games, but to grab the top spot as the best selling DVD franchise in 2013. My vision is to excite my target market and audience with plans that will push them to go out and buy the movie. This target market, I must say, will include those who have watched it at the theatres as well as those who have not (Giles 2010, pg. 61). My target market will be similar to that of the first movie, only a little broader. I will focus on people aged between eighteen and forty, and the primary core will be those aged between twenty-one-to-forty age group, appealing slightly more to men. I expect that people aged between eighteen and twenty-four will view the film as ‘a compelling look at the perils of games in general.’ If you care to know, eighteen to twenty-four year olds tend to engage in video game activity compared to other age groups (Stair & Stair 2001, pg. 83). This movie, if looked at critically, is just a real version of the different types of video games available nowadays (Beckman, Davidson & Maynard 2007, pg. 12). The concepts of surviving, tricking opponents and being smart form the basis of a majority of video games; Hunger Games employed these concepts. Thirty-five to forty age groups may view the movie as ‘childish’, but it is still possible to tap into this ever-so-elusive market. The first movie was one of the biggest U.S box-office hits of 2012, and we all know why (Pride & Ferrell 2008, pg. 19). Good marketing and promotion coupled with even better presentation allowed Hunger Games to share the stage with massive hits like Hobbit, Ice Age 4, etc. I will not go into the specific details regarding the commercial performance of the first movie, but I am confident enough to say that with the marketing strategy I will

Ethical Perspectives in Business

Ethical Perspectives in Business There are many approaches to ethics. I will briefly outline two types of theoretical approach to ethics and their implications: principle-based approaches, and character and relationship-based approaches. Principle-based approaches to ethics: It is important to understand this concept. This approach has often been based on two different ethical traditions Kantianism and utilitarianism. Immanual Kant, was a German philosopher (1724-1804) in the eighteenth-century. He developed a theory of ethics. His theory mainly focused on the ultimate principle of respect for the individual person (Kant 1785/1964). This approach to ethics is known as deontological or duty-based. It plays a vital role in moral philosophy and also in professional ethics. Persons are considered to have rational and self-determination it means they are capable of making choices and acting upon them. For deontological ethics, the important thing isnt the result or consequence of the action, but the action itself. If the action is wrong, in and of itself, then dont do it. This approach mainly has its focus on respect of the service user and also that he can make his own decisions. The main principles in this approach are to maintain confidentiality, obtain informed consent, no discrimination or offering misleading or false information. For Kant, it would be morally wrong to perform any action which is based on false information even though the end result is beneficial. According to this approach, we must all respect individuals choices. Utilitarianism, on the contrary, is a teleological theory. It is particularly associated with two British philosophers, Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) and John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) (Mill 1863/1972). Also known as the consequentialist theory of ethics. The main difference lies in the concept and it is in striking contrast as compared to the Kantian ethics. The moral worth (rightness or wrongness) of an action is said to lie in its consequences; hence if we have to decide if an action is right or wrong, we have to weigh pros and cons and also anticipate. According to this concept, if lying leads to good results, it would probably be good to lie. This theory relies on the fact that whether something is right or wrong depends on the result or end of that action. Theories that are interested in ends are called teleological. The name has originated from the Greek word for end telos. For a teleological ethical thinker, the end justifies the means. The believers of this theory argue that the rightness of an action is judged by the end it produces. In my opinion, people consider both types of ethical principles in making decisions. We have to make a judgment that ensures that we are looking at individuals best interest or the welfare of the society at a bigger scale. Absolute and relative ethics Absolute ethics holds that there is one universal moral code which is final and applies equally to all men of all ages, and that changing situations or changing views make no difference whatsoever to this absolute moral code. Relative or relativistic ethics holds that the moral standard varies with different circumstances. There are so many cultural and religious differences and in some circumsatnces, it may be ethically correct to do certain things but in other situations it might be completely immoral. For example it is right for Muslim people to have four wives but for a Christian man this would be considered immoral. Examples of ethical issues which can affect the operational activities of a business. The advantages of ethical behaviour include: Higher revenues demand from positive consumer support. This will also lead to improved brand and business awareness and recognition. If the business in running in an ethical manner, it would also lead to better employee motivation and recruitment. And finally the business will grow because of new sources of finance. But sometimes the situation is difficult and there are some ethical issues faced. It can be difficult to decide as to what is right and what is wrong. Certain examples are: Use of child labour and forced labour: It is against the law to use children for work or to employ someone to work for you against his or her will. They might need the money but it is unethical. Even if the child or his parents agree and provide their consent, it is unethical and illegal to use child labour and do forced labour. Production in sweatshops is also unethical. Sweatshop is a factory or production place where the working environment considered to be unacceptably difficult or dangerous. Employee Working Conditions: employers must be aware of the safety of their work environment and must make sure that they pay their employees adequately. An employee should take ethics into consideration while giving a very difficult task or asking an employee to stay for long hours outside the working times. Violation of the basic rights of workers: All workers have the basic rights. Everyone is entitled to a break when they have worked continuously for long hours. Even if there is a deadline to meet or there is lot of work to be completed, we must ensure that the basic rights are provided to all the workers. Ignoring health, safety and environmental standards: Sometimes due to financial restraints the employer is not able to cater for the health and safety and it doesnt meet the required standards. There is no excuse for this type of behaviour. This would be considered unethical. Employee behavior: This can be a matter of debate. Should an employer allow his employees to read their personal emails at work? If the employee makes any complaint of harassment at work, how will the manager deal with it? These are few examples of ethical issues regarding employee behavior. Supplier/Customer Relations: must consider whether it is ethical to do business with other business workers who have unethical practices. References: Ethical Studies Second Edition, Bob Bowie, Robert Bowie, Edition 2, illustrated, Publisher Nelson Thornes, 2004 Ethical Issues in Youth Work, Professional ethics, Sarah Banks, Taylor Francis, 2010 Ethical Issues in Business: Inquiries, Cases, and Readings, Peg Tittle, Broadview Press, 2000 Current Issues in Business Ethics, Peter W. F. Davies, Routledge, 1997 Task 2 Learning Outcome 2 (750 Words) What is an objective? Explain how the objectives of a business can be affected by ethical considerations An objective can be described as particular future state of things to be achieved by the business. This could be described as a desired destination or result. In business, it is usually expressed in terms of profit. There can be business or long term objectives and functional or short term objectives. Market standing, productivity, innovation, financial resources, profitability, manager or other workers performance and also public and social responsibility will be the business or long term objectives. While profit, customer orientation, survival and growth, increase in the sales, increase in the market share and efficiency are all functional or short term objectives. How far the company or a business will go to achieve these objectives varies from one business to the other. There are so many legal and ethical issues to be aware of. For example, the company wants to grow and make more profits. They have found a defect in the product they are selling but people are buying it and have had no complaints so far. It is against the moral and ethics to keep selling that product. Another example can be if a business is providing expert help like consultation to the public. If the person is not adequately trained and not authorised to provide that help, this is also unethical. This may be bringing in the desired profits and also the company is booming with clients. But is the employers responsibility to understand that this conduct is against the ethics. Examples of a range of business stakeholders and how to promote ethical behavior in respect of these stakeholders. Stakeholder groups vary both in terms of their interest in the business activities and also their power to influence business decisions. Shareholders are important as their interests would be profit growth, share price growth, dividends. They have the power to elect the directors. It might be a practice to keep them happy with materialistic gifts and rewards but it is unethical and a good business should be staying away from such practices. Banks other lenders are important as stakeholders. They help the business by providing the money. We have to take into account the ethical consideration while dealing with the banks and other lenders. There job is to see thet interest and principal to be repaid, maintain credit rating. They can enforce loan covenants and withdraw banking facilities. Directors and managers as stakeholders have important role to play. They deal with salary, share options and job satisfaction. They also make decisions, have detailed information about the company. Employees are a big part of the group as stakeholders. To promote ethical behaviour, salaries wages, job security, job satisfaction motivation should be appropriate. If it is ethical, the result would be good turnover, industrial action and better service quality. Suppliers would be interested in long term contracts, prompt payment, and growth of purchasing. We should take ethics into consideration while deciding pricing, quality, product availability Customers play indispensable part as stakeholders. They will always expect reliable quality, value for money, product availability and customer service. This is when ethics come into play. Many businesses will go to any limit to please their customers because they will generate revenue. If the customers are happy, they will spread word of mouth recommendation. Community is also important as a stakeholder. Business people must ensure that the business is safe and is in accordance with health and safety rules and regulations. It is unethical to run a business which does not comply with these rules. Environment has to be safe. A business should generate local jobs which will help to provide employment to the people in the area. Government is also a stakeholder as the higher authorities will make the laws and these must be followed at all times by the business people. For establishing an ethical standard for business it is important that we have more than just a written policy. So that we can ensure that ethical standard is being met, we must comply with adherence to and enforcement of that standard by everyone. That includes who have written the policies and who run the business. More than long written documents and policies handed out to every single employee, our behavior, practices, and deeds are the foundation for creating an ethical standard. References: Marketing Plans: How to Prepare Them, How to Use Them, Malcolm McDonald, Hugh Wilson, John Wiley Sons, 2011 Introduction to Travel and Tourism Marketing, J. Alf Bennett, J.W. Strydom, J.A. Bennett, Juta and Company Ltd, 2001 Give examples of a range of business stakeholders. What can businesses do to promote ethical behavior in respect of these stakeholders? Tack 3 Learning Outcome 3 (750 Words) A moral agent and is it true to say that a business is a moral agent? A moral agent is a being that is capable of acting with reference to right and wrong. We can also describe moral agent as anything that can be held responsible for behavior or decisions. Moral agents have rights and responsibilities. If we do not believe that anything or anyone should ever be blamed or has the responsibility, then we are going against the concept of moral agency, and not accepting the concept of responsibilities and rights. A moral agent must be a living creature, as they must be able to understand the basic moral principles and use them to make decisions. They must have self-consciousness, ability to memorize, moral principles, values and the ability for reasoning and making judgments. In my opinion, increasingly, businesses are being seen not just as profit making entities but also as moral agents. They are accountable for their conduct to the employees, customers, investors and suppliers. Companies are chartered as citizens of the state or the nation so they have the same responsibilities and rights as individuals. Society holds the companies accountable for the behavior of their employees. When certain business advertises about them, they refer to benefits, compensation or competitive practices; they earn a reputation as a moral agent. Companies are required to obey rules and regulations that define acceptable business conduct. Though obviously not a person, a business can be considered as a societal moral agent. If a business is not run ethically, it could face huge penalties or fines from the regulatory bodies. Businesses to get their employees involved and empowered in relation to the ethical performance of the business. Businesses should endeavor to get their employees involved, especially in relation to the ethical performance of the business. Employee involvement and participation are aimed at raising employees performance and commitment. There should be nice policies outlined for each business and all the employees should be well aware of those policies and guidelines. Each individual in the company should have clear understanding of their roles and therefore be able to work ethically. There should be frequent meetings and discussions between the employer and the employees. Any issues which are unclear or employees are in doubt about their role in ethical consideration; they should be able to get help at all times. Full training should be provided to people so that their role in the business is clear and they know what defines their job roles. In order for the business to perform well and maintains high ethical standards, employees should be fully involved. This task should not be limited to one or few individuals but it necessitates teamwork. Each employee should be the part of the team which is working towards the common goal of a profitable business but not at the cost of ethics. Recent business scandals have drawn public attention toward the ethics of businesses. Although researchers have shown a small correlation between the ethical activities and firm financial performance, its not clear how the process works. When individuals see their company is maintaining higher ethical standards, they become more committed to the company. This commitment in turns starts organizational citizenship behaviors toward other employees, and these behaviors in turn gradually lead to better financial performance. The level of an individuals involvement with his or her employer is the strongest mechanism by which business ethics leads to financial rewards. When a company produces and adheres to strong ethical guidelines, this offers employees a clear idea of whats expected of them on the job. Less job ambiguity leads to greater productivity. Employees should help each other. Employees going above and beyond their job descriptions to help each other, such as helping others who are behind on their work-is one of the main process that will lead to good productivity. This type of behaviour proves beneficial as it means key activities get done, regardless of whos doing them. We must use a code of ethics and guidelines in accordance with legal and professional standards in addition to human resource practices such as ethics training. Employer should always be patient and calm. They must realise that some of the new employees will take some time to get adjusted to the new environment. After full training, they will all be working towards the common goal of financial success. So it is vital that employees get involved and empowered in relation to the ethical performance of the business. References: Business Ethics: Ethical Decision Making Cases, O. C. Ferrell, John Fraedrich, Ferrell, Cengage Learning, 2012 Ethical Issues in Contemporary Human Resource Management, Diana Winstanley, Jean Woodall, Palgrave Macmillan, 2000 Task 4 Learning Outcome 4 (1250words) Choose an ethical issue which currently affects business of your choice. Do some research on this and explain it. How do you think the business you have chosen could improve the ethics of its operations whilst meeting objectives and ensuring good employer/employee relationships? The business I have chosen is a private learning centre or an academy. This academy offers many vocational courses to different students. The centre is not working ethically. They get to know the question papers well in advance and they offer help to the students during their final exams. Students are not complaining because they are getting excellent results because of the help being provided. One other main cause for ethical consideration is that the teachers are not fully qualified to be able to deliver the courses. Business is running successfully and also making lot of money. It is easy to attract lots of students who want to pass their exam in an easy manner without any hard work involved. Under qualified teachers are charging less money to the employer so in this situation, the employer, employee and the service users are all happy. But let us discuss this by taking ethics into consideration. For example a student has done first aid course and now he is the proud owner of a certificate too. But the main question is that will be able to handle the situation in case of an emergency. To improve the ethics of its operations and also ensure that the centre is meeting objectives and ensuring good employer/employee relationship, a lot needs to be done at the centre. Employer must realise that this is unethical. Exams should be held in strict conditions and no help should be offered to the students at all. It is unethical and against the law. If any inspection agency knows about it the whole business could face serious charges and risk closure. Then the students future would also suffer. This business could improve a lot by considering each aspect of their business ethically. Offering help to the students and employing under qualified teachers is against the law. This will not lead to brighter students. And this private company is not doing any good. These serious issues need to be considered and thought over and strict action needs to be taken against this company. Teachers should be fully qualified and suitably trained. The exams should be held in a transparent manner with no help provided. Practice classes should be offered to the students, if needed. If the students can afford, they should be offered help with their syllabus and practice sessions. What is a code of ethics? Design a suitable ethical code for an organization of your choice. A business should recognize its obligation to set and uphold the highest standards of professionalism, and to promote ethical behaviour, attitudes and judgments. Code of ethics should focus on multiple relationships where the employer owes an allegiance to different stakeholders; Personal relationships should be adequately emphasized in code of ethics- where the employer infringes or violates the trust of a client or clients; Code of ethics should clearly mention unclear or inadequate standards of practice where the the emplyer is unaware of or disregards the current systems in use by peers or others in similar work. Breaches of confidentiality should definitely be elaborated where rules and constraints were broken or not clarified in advance with stakeholders; Competence where excessive or misleading claims are made or where inadequate safeguards and monitoring exist for new areas of work; these must form an essential part of the code of ethics. I have designed a suitable code of ethics for a company called ABC Learning Academy. It is a private institute which provides vocational courses to the students. Mostly adult learners and the staff constitute of director, board members, managers, teachers, administrators, cleaners and helpers. This code of ethics would guide the staff members in times of difficulty and lays a strong foundation of ethics which need to be considered while making any decisions at workplace. Conduct Personal behaviour it is expected that all staff members will: Act ethically and integrity, in the best interests of ABC Learning Academy at all times; Take individual responsibility to contribute actively to maintain adequate teaching and administrative standards. Honesty is the best policy at all times, Position should not be used inappropriately to influence or discriminate amongst the employees. Must comply with at least 75% attendance; In case of any doubt, always ask for help from your colleagues or senior members of the staff, Take decisions fairly and promptly, considering all available information, legislation, policies and procedures, be impartial at all times; Treat colleagues with respect, courtesy, honesty and fairness; Not to discriminate against colleagues, members of the public and/or employees; not to harass or bully anyone. These matters would be dealt seriously; have proper regard for colleagues interests, rights, safety and welfare, professional workplace relationships to maintain harmonious, safe and productive environment; Conflicts of interest it is expected that staff members will: Not disclose any personal or business interests at ABC Learning Academy; Ensure personal or financial interests do not affect their ability to take ethical decisions at work, Not allow personal or financial interests, or the interests of any associated person, to conflict with the interests of ABC Learning Academy. Manage and declare any conflict between their personal and public duty; and Where conflicts of interest do arise, public interest should be the priority. Communication and official information it is expected that staff members will: Communicate amongst them so that there are no gaps in information available about students and their data. Not disclose official information or documents like students records, assignments, individual learning plans, other than as required by law or where agreed by decision of the board; Not make any unauthorised public statements regarding the business of ABC Learning Academy; Support, adhere to and not contradict the formal decisions of the final decisions made by ABC Learning Academy. Respect the confidentiality and privacy of all information of students and staff. Use of public resources it is expected that board members will: Act in a financially responsible manner, use judgment to analyse financial reports, audit reports and other financial material that comes before the ABC Learning Academy; and Ensure the efficient use of publicly-funded resources, including office facilities and equipment, vehicles, transport, ABC Learning Academy credit cards. In addition, staff members must commit to: Understand their responsibility to report any happenings of misconduct which they may be suspicious of or aware of, Taking responsibility for contributing in a constructive, respectful and enthusiastic way to enhance good management and the reputation of the board of ABC Learning Academy. Research issues including fake data, inability to obtain consent, or not acknowledging somebodys piece of work. Health problems should be reported adequately because they can have significant impact on the work efficiency.

The Tomorrow City by Monica Hughes :: Hughes Tomorrow City

The Tomorrow City by Monica Hughes The plot of this book centres around two adolescents, David and Caro and an evil supercomputer which aspires to control the futuristic city of Thompsonville.   Dr. Henderson, Caro's Father creates the "perfect" computer designed to solve all of the problems of Thompsonville by gaining almost complete power of the city.   The computer then begins to make rash decisions of it's own. It decides that humans are incapable of making decisions of there own and soon devises a method of controlling the minds of everyone in the city.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Only two young people, Caro and David, are not manipulated by the computer.   They band together and work out a strategy to disable the computer.   The two make a daring infiltration of the building that the computer is located and after a traumatic episode in which Caro is blinded, the computer is destroyed and the city is returned to it's previous state.   The theme of the book is to show that technology is not a perfect solution to the many problems faced by man.   By using a product of technology, the computer, and showing how it was supposed to be a perfect solution to the city's problems, yet it made a grave error in calculations, the author is saying that many problems faced by man cannot be solved by the use of technology.   Technology played a negative role in this book.   The computer, the major aspect of technology used in this book, used its capabilities to immorally rule the citizens and the city of Thompsonville.   The computer transmitted hypnotic signals through peoples T.V. sets and would use them to carry out it's will to ultimately control the city.   It then discarded anything or anyone who were useless to it's purpose including the elderly and the sick. One of the major arguments that the author uses to emphasize the theme is the significant malfunctioning of the computer.   It was designed to be flawless and solve the numerous problems of the city.   But, the computer's rationing is shown throughout the book to be poor.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The methods in which it goes about solving the city's problems

The Auditor Must Have Adequate Technical Training And Proficiency To Perform Accounting Essay Essays

The Auditor Must Have Adequate Technical Training And Proficiency To Perform Accounting Essay Essays The Auditor Must Have Adequate Technical Training And Proficiency To Perform Accounting Essay Essay The Auditor Must Have Adequate Technical Training And Proficiency To Perform Accounting Essay Essay I chose Section 200 General Standards Accounting Principles, better known as Generally Accepted Auditing Standards ( GAAS ) . They were developed by the AICPA in 1947 and have undergone minor alterations since so. ( 4 ) These are sets of regulations and guidelines promulgated by the AICPA s Auditing Standards Board. ( 3 ) The intent is to run into the aims of an audit scrutiny, which have been identified as: to obtain sensible confidence about whether the fiscal statements as a whole are free of material misstatement, whether due to fraud or mistake, thereby enabling hearers to show an sentiment on whether the fiscal statement are prepared, in all stuff respects, in conformity with an applicable fiscal coverage model ; and to describe on the fiscal statements, and communicate as required by GAAS, in conformity with the hearer s findings. [ ( 2 ) . p.39 ] II. The wide criterions are backed by elaborate interpretive literature. An hearer unable to show an sentiment on the fiscal statements must give grounds. A CPA who does non carry on an scrutiny in conformity with GAAS can be held in misdemeanor of the AICPA s Code of Professional Ethics and face legal action by affected parties. ( 7 ) The GAAS serves as a fiscal tool whereby the person, company or authorities bureaus gather and make accurate studies for fixing revenue enhancement signifiers, using for concern loans, adhering insurance, describing to the board of managers or the general populace. On the single degree, this procedure is simplified unless the individual has a considerable sum of varied assets. Modernizing Liturgical English

Modernizing Liturgical English Modernizing Liturgical English Modernizing Liturgical English By Maeve Maddox A reader writes: In church, our liturgy has traditionally used a phrase such as Thou Who sittest at the right hand of God the Father to refer to Jesus, singular. As we have changed over from using the King James Bible translation, we have also gradually changed from use of thee and thou and the est forms of the verbs in the liturgy. I believe, then, that we should be singing You Who sit at . . . but those in charge have written You Who sits at . . . It disturbs me (only slightlyI know the intended meaning regardless of the word used) every time I sing it. Am I correct or just being picky? I dont think the reader is being picky. It makes sense that if editors are going to modernize a 16th century idiom, the changes ought to reflect standard modern usage. In the year 2009, you sits is not standard usage, neither spoken nor written. The confusion with the passage quoted lies with the word who, which may be either singular or plural: The man who is sitting on the wall can see the lighthouse. The men who are sitting in the tree can also see it. In the liturgical quotation above, who refers to singular thou. Thou who sittest at the right hand of the Father translates as You who sit at the right hand of God the Father. Personally I object to changing the old verb forms in liturgical use. When a student wants the most up-to-date translation, obviously the King James Version is not the one to rely on. If encouraging religious feeling is the goal, however, I cant think of anything more beautiful and stirring than a reading from the KJV. Most of the tongue-twisters can be avoided by substituting the sound /s/ for the -eths. Thats very likely what many of the original readers of the KJV did anyway. A.C. Baugh points out (A History of the English Language), that Shakespeare used both the eth and -s forms for third-person verbs, as in this passage from A Merchant of Venice (c. 1597): The quality of mercy is not straind, It droppeth as a gentle rain from heaven Upon the place beneath: it is twice blessd; It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:†¦ Baugh quotes Richard Hodgess A Special Help to Orthographie (1643) in which the writer notes the disconnect between how verbs are written and how they are pronounced in ordinary speech: Howsoever wee use to Write thus, leadeth it, maketh it, noteth it, raketh it, per-fumeth it, etc. Yet in our ordinary speech (which is best to bee understood) wee say, leads it, makes it, notes it, rakes it, per-fumes it. Its refreshing to seein the 17th century, as in the 21stthe standard written dialect at odds with the standard spoken dialect. Organization Development and Change Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 4

Organization Development and Change - Essay Example (Cummings, T. & Worley, C., 2008) According to the reading, when the OD consultant and Lincoln’s president prepared the contract they stated their expectations of each other and that no steps were to be taken until the OD consultant had interviewed the two parties. I am unsure if the information was insignificant to the issue or not but after this mention of a meeting with the president, another contract or a supplement to the contract stating the steps, ground rules and resources to be spent on the intervention was never mentioned in the reading again. I think this is important in this case especially because a hospital is a very busy workplace. The two participants in the intervention have jobs that demand most of their time, and the intervention would require their time as well to be effective. If these steps were set in the contract, the participants would not be in a position to say no because they are wasting their work time on something that may appear useless to them given their predisposition towards each other. Also, the president would not be interrupting sessions, asking the participants to attend to their tasks, because the hours the OD consultant would need are in the contract he signed. With regard to the diagnosis stage, I also approve of what the OD practitioner did. Interviews were not confined to the two main participants. Since each person was complaining of the other’s personality mostly than the individual’s skills as a nurse and surgeon, respectively, it helped the OD consultant to also ask the people who were exposed to the participants’ personalities and work attitudes. These additional interviews were able to give him a much clearer picture of how other people viewed each participant and enabled him to identify the problem area(s) and define solutions for these. He was also able to strategize on what was the best plan
